Complex Numbers for Electrical Engineering

This course is a revision of complex numbers. It goes into further maths at: A Level, or first year degree engineering maths. You can buy the book on this link: JB ECT 5th Edition. I would highly recommend the John Bird books on Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Engineering Maths. They take you step by step from GCSE level to 2nd Year Degree level Concepts. In fact you learn the information so well that by the end of the first section or Level you’ll be able to tell when the author has made a mistake. I would also recommend buying the lastest edition as I spotted some ommissions and mistakes that have been corrected from the 5th Edition to the latest edition, which is John Birds Electrical Circuit Theory and Technology 7th Edition.

I politely asked for his help with spotting the ommissions and making corrections and he appreciated my input. Out of the millions of books he sold I was the only one who wrote back to say: I didn’t understand how this could be correct from 2016 to 2020. I mainly worked through his book in the summer as I was more optimistic then.

Chapter Purpose

Introduces and explains all the complex maths you need to work out electric Circuit equations in the following chapters. In this chapter youd learn the following:

  • Define complex numbers, and
  • Understand the argand diagram
  • Perform calculations on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in polar as well as cartesian form
  • Use De Moivre’s theory to work out roots and powers of complex numbers.

My notes may not contain all the above info theyre purpose was just to show, that I understand maths at this level.
